  3. Case background information • During the Japanese American war, the President signed Executive order 9066, which allowed military authorities to enact curfews. It also forced Japanese – Americans to sell their homes and belongings and move to internment camps. Fred Korematsu, a Japanese- American and U.S. Citizen, had facial surgery and pretended to be Mexican- American but got arrested for violating an order that banned people of Japanese descent from the area of San Leandro, California. http://landmarkcases.org/en/landmark/cases/korematsu_v_united_states

  5. How did the Court answer the essential question? • The court vote was 6:3 in favor of the United States. They came to the conclusion saying that without the Japanese- Americans in internment camps, the public would be in danger.
