Why Development Studies? • Development is a process of planned change designed to advance the welfare of poor people in the developing world. • It tends to attract students who are already committed to promoting rights, equality and social justice. • It’s a great subject if you have interests that cover multiple disciplines and what to use you knowledge to make a difference in the world. It is a multidisciplinary field and covers numerous areas from anthropology to economics to plant science to sanitation and so on. • Development Studies deals with a wide range of contemporary development issues from environmental degradation, sustainability, gender, social development, rights and development, aid policy, managing conflict and communication for development. • Development Studies at UoA allows you to follow a range of subjects/disciplines and develop a specialism that can be extended through Honours or Masters-level study. Where will Development take me? • Despite demise of AusAID GoA still spends approximately $5 billion on aid per year. • The graduate program for AusAID has been absorbed into DFAT and will continue. • Development provides an excellent analytical grounding in topics relevant to development, diplomacy, but also issues that are relevant to poverty and inequality in Australia. • Beyond Australia work with multilateral and bilateral agencies is a career possibility.
