Improving Polymer LED Turn-on Time via Molecular Design and ProcessingThuc-Quyen Nguyen, University of California-Santa Barbara, DMR 0547639 Al Anionic conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) PFPEOCO2Na containing ion-conducting polyethylene oxide substituents is used to enhance the luminance temporal response of polymer light emitting diodes (PLED) containing CPE electron injection layers (EILs). Pristine PLED devices are observed exhibit long luminance response times in the order of tenths of seconds but with a combination thermal and voltage treatments to “lock” ions at CPE metal and polymer interfaces, devices with luminance response times of micro-seconds are achieved. The much faster luminance response time opens up the possibility of using PLEDs in applications that require faster turn on time such as display technologies. Emissive Layer PEDOT:PSS Glass/ITO PLED structure, chemical structure of the anionic CPE used as electron injection layer, and the turn-on time for devices with (red) and without (black) heat and voltage treatment to lock ions.
Engaging Young Students in Science and Mentoring Graduate Students Thuc-Quyen Nguyen, University of California-Santa Barbara, DMR 0547639 • Graduate students from the PI group visited several high schools to talk to these students about college, research, and different career options for scientists to encourage them to go to college and to major in science. • Developed and ran a workshop on “How to choose a research group” for new graduate students in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry • Developed and ran a workshop on “Developing Mentoring Relationships with Faculty” for New Graduate Student Orientation at UCSB • Co-organized a Workshop on Polymer/Organic Materials and Devices, Institute of Polymer Optoelectronic Materials and Devices, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, P.R. China Graduate students in the Nguyen group gave demonstrations to high school students. A high school student participated in the demo to learn about exothermic reaction, activation energy, and how burning gas can be used for heating and cooking.
