Not Why ...When to deploy IPv6? • IP layer is special & IP layer now includes IPv6 • Dealing with myths and objections • v6 has failed, expensive, nobody asks for it, no applications, difficult to justify investment, v4 works, OK if vendors offer it. We don’t choose technology • Understanding what is real • Standards, Implementations, Infrastructure, vendors, applications and users, • Have a transition strategy

  4. Understanding the RoI • Added value or Reduced costs? • Direct revenue or indirect? • Open or closed Revenue models? • Differentiating Brand & your values • Best effort and differentiated services • Risk assessments • Include not doing IPv6 • Timing • v4 is not a cash cow!

Develop leadership for IPv6 transition in UK • UK Task Force (formed 2001) • Informal activity – no funding, no staff, no office • BCS, IntellectUK, The CMA, IEEE, UKERNA, JISC, LINX, Nominet UK, CBI, OII, ISOC UK, UKUUG, RIPE NCC, EU Commission, DTI, MoD, Cabinet Office, Number 10 Policy Unit, a number of businesses in and around Internet and telecommunications. • Steering team of enthusiasts • Peter Kirstein (UCL), John King (BT), Charlie Lewis (426.com) Tim Chown (UoS), C. de Larrinaga (Voex & ISOC), Chris Edwards/Martin Dunmore UoLancaster

  8. UK IPv6 User & Enterprise Survey 2004/5 • Private invitation surveys through major UK IT organisations in December 2004 • 189 responses • 83% use NAT • 1% support v6 • 25% trade with Asian partners who are deploying IPv6 • 27% have considered transition

ISP Survey for LINX • 26 ISP’s responded • 71% considered migrating to add value • Want greater impetus to move ISP’s to IPv6 • IPv6 seen as inevitable • Due to competition & market forces • Drawbacks • Overheads and complexity, Multi Homing • Only 38% have IPv6 trained personnel • 50% of hosts now support IPv6

Next Steps • Need resources to promote IPv6 • UK networks to offer IPv6 to customers • Establish an IPv6 related event in UK • Improve information & awareness for IPv6 • New UK Operators Survey for 2006 • promote & co-ordinate key IPv6 leadership communities • Operators and Networks • Key customer communities • MoD IPv6 Focus Group is very important & must continue.
