  1. Vassalage 1/28/13

  2. Vocabulary

  3. 1. Vassalage • The great noblemen pledged fidelity to the king and he rewarded them with fiefs in return. At the same time, the great noblemen divided up lands among other noblemen of lower ranks (and knights) in exchange for fidelity. • Not all the knights had the same wealth and power. There were small, modest knights and rich, powerful knights. • Knights were linked through vassalage. This consisted mainly of a ceremony in which both the lord and the vassal took part. • The vassal paid homage to the lord—he swore an Oath of Fealty; the vassal was required for life to help and support the lord, especially in military conflicts. • The lord committed himself to protect the vassal and house him in his dwellings or give him a castle or territory. This donation was called a fief, the term which feudalism derives from. • In the beginning, the fief was given on a temporary basis, depending on the fidelity of the vassal. In the course of time, it was held for life and inherited from father to son.

  4. 2. Oath of Fealty • AKA Oath of Allegiance, Oath of Fidelity, many other names • A vassal’s official promise to enter into a feudal relationship with a lord.

  5. 3. Tournament • Big events where knights and knights in training practice the skills they need for battle • Upheld feudal values • Upheld ideas of chivalry

  6. 4. 3-Field-System • Rotating crop fields each year so that one is planted in the spring, one in the fall, and one lies fallow (not planted) • Lets the soil gain nutrients back, more food is able to be produced.

  7. 5. Peasants (free v. serf) • Most people in the middle ages were peasants • Most (at least 80%) of the peasants were serfs, that is to say, they depended on a lord or monastery and could not leave the lands where they had been born. • Other peasants were free. They owned the lands they worked on and did not have to pay for them.

  8. Study Guide (Test Wednesday) • How and why did feudalism develop? • How did feudal relationships provide the foundation for the political order in Europe? • Describe how the economy works in a feudal society. • Vocabulary you MUST know: Feudalism Manorialism Lord Vassal Knight Peasant Serf Fief Oath of Fealty Manor Chivalry Tournaments Viking Franks Clovis Charles Martel Charlemagne Fallow Centralized/Decentralized and Local Government
