2 blood flow activities • Raise 1 hand over your head and put your other hand below waist. When teacher tells you to look at both hands. • Move hand in the direction demonstrated by the teacher-look at hand.
Shock • Is a progressive condition in which the circulatory system fails to circulate oxygen rich blood to all parts of the body. • Vital organs will not function properly and the body will start to fail.
Types of Shock • 1. Anaphylactic Shock- a life-threatening condition when the body has an allergic reaction to something. Example: bees, peanut butter, and seafood.
Alex Baptist died due to a peanut allergy in Kindergarten.Two attempts were made with an epi-pen but where administered improperly. One women actually stuck herself instead of him.
Cardiogenic shock • Failure of the heart to effectively circulate blood to all parts of the body. Heart attack
Hypovolemic Shock • Severe bleeding or loss of blood plasma due to internal or external wounds/burns or with severe fluid loss. Oil burn when hose broke
Neurogenic Shock • A disruption of the nervous system which makes the blood vessels expand and blood pressure drop. Fainting
Septic shock • Toxins caused by a severe infection causes the blood vessels to dilate. 8yr old Mike lost hands and feet due to a bacterial infection which deprived oxygen to them.
Signs and Symptoms • Restlessness and Irritability • Altered consciousness • Pale, ashen, bluish, cool or moist skin • Rapid breathing • Rapid and weak pulse • Excessive thirst • Nausea or vomiting
Care • CHECK • CALL • CARE • Have them lie down on their back to rest • Keep victim from getting chilled or overheated. • Elevate legs 12 inches to get blood to vital organs. • Monitor ABCs-do not give fluids
Do not elevate the legs if: • Victim is nauseated and having trouble breathing • Suspect a head, neck or back injury • Broken bones involving hips or legs • If moving them causes pain.
Concerns with childrenShock may develop with fluid loss ie. diarrhea or vomiting so replace fluids immediately or call 911
