  1. MICE CM32 SummaryScheduling and planning; aims for this year • Schedule update • Main schedule drivers • Keeping us on schedule • Comment on Steps V & VI • Detail planning for Step IV • Conclusion Andy Nichols, STFC, 22/2/12

  2. MICE SCHEDULE update February 2012 V1 m Run date: STEP I EMR run Q2 2012 STEP IV Q4 2012 and 2013 Under construction: STEP V STEPVI NB: target date 2016

  3. MICE Top-Level Project Schedule • Step IV • Step V • Revision date: 10th February 2012 (CM32) • Note: items in red text are key schedule drivers • Items in orange text are high risk items • Items in Green text are complete

  4. STEP IV Step IV ready...Q1, 2013

  5. STEP VI Under Construction!! Step VI target date....2016

  6. Main schedule drivers Put very simply, for Step IV it is: Spectrometer solenoid 1 & 2 AFC 1 Liquid hydrogen delivery system EMR These items are all in their final stages of manufacture and are scheduled for this year Other important items are: Diffuser Radiation shutter Solid absorbers Magnetic measurements Again, much of the work is done....

  7. Comment on Steps V & VI As before, we still cannot predict a delivery date of Step V until we have a robust delivery plan for the Coupling magnets But there has been some welcome progress: Cryostat review now fixed for Feb 29th Coil #1 cold test preparations are well advanced Good feedback from Industry (Meyer Tool) on fabrication Discussions on delivery plan started - CERN large magnet group and DL involved – very early days, hope to follow up after Feb 29th review We have been asked to submit a major Step V & VI readiness review when Step IV is complete, ie, beginning of 2013 It will have to contain the above, and much more.... A major opportunity for the project

  8. Keeping us on schedule This year luckily we are focussed by the deliveries of large items, we have to Understand the detailed integration very closely Not ignore services and pipework Or general moving things about, eg, dewars and transfer lines First planning workshop held on 3rd Feb, more planned this year; relevant people need to attend in person – no phone link envisaged Weekly Hall meetings need emphasising – attendance has always been good though Equally important are people: Each subsystem must nominate the person(s) who will support it during both installation and running

  9. Re-organised MICO meetings working well • Six top level milestones for each important deliverable tracked weekly • Many thanks to Gail Hanson for making it all work

  10. Planning the Step IV detail schedule Too much detail for a ten minute presentation... Alan Grant has the detailed schedule at: http://www.eng.dl.ac.uk/secure/mice/Costs%20&%20Schedules/Working%20Schedules/ Points to note: Step IV complete installation occupies all of 2012 calendar year It’s conveniently split into two halves by the EMR run in May/June: Before EMR Run: Floor building A/C rework LH2 testing AFC #1 acceptance and integration in R9 After EMR Run Tracker integration Spectrometer solenoid installation Diffuser and rad.shutter AFC installation It’s a highly sequential operation!

  11. Key dates FC #1 arrival: mid-late April (two week delay due to OVC machining) Magnet mapping in R9: May Moving floors complete and tested: May Helium test complete in MICE Hall: mid-March Hydrogen test complete: 15th May Arrival of EMR: 15th May EMR commissioning run complete: 15th June Arrival of SS #1: mid June Arrival of SS#2: September Overall magnet installation period: mid June – Jan, 2013 This includes: Magnet mapping Diffuser & rad shield installation Tracker integration

  12. Making it work..... Each event has to take place in its allotted ‘window’ for this to work But we have to retain some flexibility for unforseen variables Weekly detail planning is done strictly at the Wednesday Hall meetings and MICO meetings It only works if the relevant experts attend Three more detail planning workshops will be held this year Important open questions: Magnetic field tolerance of equipment – magnet working grp. Asbestos removal from R9 – BPG Do we really have the space to insert the trackers in situ? MICE needs to generate a list of subsystem experts prepared to travel!

  13. Conclusion This summary is normally quite difficult to deliver But this time I feel more relaxed, because: Realistic planning has paid off Schedule float has been added Delivery expectations are sensible Manpower has been reinforced in critical areas (although we still need more) So thanks everybody!
