  1. Of the pharmaceutical drugs currently prescribed by physicians 10% are still extracted from plants. Of the pharmaceutical drugs currently being prescribed by physicians another 15% were originally discovered in plants, but are now synthetically manufactured. Of all the pharmaceutical drugs ever prescribed by physicians historically 50% were originally discovered in plants.

  2. Willow Aspirin Doctrine of Signatures……early herbalists thought that since Willow trees had very flexible limbs that the bark of Willows might be good for people with un-flexible limbs (eg. Arthritis) !

  3. Spiraea Aspirin • The “A” in “Aspirin” comes from “Acetyl salicylic acid” • The “spir” in “Aspirin” comes form “Spiraea”

  4. Datura Scopolamine • Blooms at night….called “Lady of the Night”. • Hindu = “Dhat” means “eternal essence of god”

  5. Foxglove Digoxin

  6. Sweet Clover Coumadin First discovered in Canada…..herd of cows were getting sick & dying …bleeding to death (like hemophilia)…later in Wisconsin they discovered that it was ‘fermented hay’ (fungi) producing an anti-coagulant…eventually, someone there realized it might have medicinal properties

  7. Chinese Wormwood Artemisinin

  8. Autumn Crocus Colchicum • Contains “Colchicine” which stops spindle fibers from forming during mitosis. • Can be used in lab to increase “ploidy levels” of plants….instead of two sets • the plant has extra sets.

  9. Colchicine • Seedless watermelons are Triploids (3 sets of chromosomes instead of 2). • These are made by crossing a Tetraploid (4 sets) with a Diploid (2 sets)…. • Tetraploid watermelons are made using Colchicine

  10. Jaborandi Pilocarpine • Indians in Amazon jungle called it “Slobbery Plant”…”jabbering”

  11. Mormon Tea Ephedrine

  12. Mayapple Podophyllin • Thought it looked like Mandrake

  13. Vinca rosea Vinblastine

  14. Rauwolfia serpentina Reserpine • Used in ancient India for snake bites…..”Serpentina”

  15. Ipecac Cephaeline • No longer recommended….activated charcoal is better !

  16. Ipecac Cephaeline • This plant is a “Liana”

  17. Plantago

  18. Tupelo

  19. Topoisomerase I Inhibitor • Topoisomerase causes transient ‘nicks’ to form in DNA during • DNA Replication …but Camptosar prevents those nicks from • ‘healing’ back up

  20. Tabernanthe Ibogaine

  21. Camellia sinensis Tea Theophylline

  22. Pacific Yew Taxol

  23. Cinchona Quinine

  24. Poppy Morphine

  25. Rubber Tree Latex

  26. Rubber Tree Latex Latex gloves Sidewalls of all radial tires Sept. 2005 All airplane tires

  27. There are 1000s of other potential medicines in plants in the world waiting to be discovered….. This is one reason why the loss of natural vegetation (like in Tropical Rainforests) is such a big problem.
