CONTEXT • Chapters 1-5: Jesus has power and authority
Rejection and unbelief • The crowd were accepting at first because they wanted to benefit from his power. • verse 2“were amazed”; he shocked them, he blew their minds. • verse 6 “he was amazed at their lack of faith”. • verse 4 “Only in his own town, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honour”.
Rejection and unbelief • They question the authority of Jesus. • They practically assault Jesus. • Jesus ‘power was limited by the unbelief of his countrymen. • Jesus only marvelled at 2 things – Jewish unbelief and Gentile faith. • Our Saviour understands what rejection is and equips us to deal with it.
Spiritual mission to release the captives. • The call of the disciples is sandwiched between 2 stories of rejected prophets. • The disciples had to trust God for everything - we need to have a similar mind set. • Jesus gave his disciples power and authority. • They were sent out 2 by 2- as a team. • They preached in such a way as to produce repentance.
Let your light shine • Our world is characterised by unbelief - 4th largest religion. • “Shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life”. • Where are you going to shine your light this coming month?
