  1. Extracurricular Activities Equitable Club Offerings at ES & HS Power Hour Scott Stapler Coordinator – Athletics and Extracurricular Activities August 8, 2019

  2. 6.5.1 General – • Students may be offered a fair and equal opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities and organizations. Extracurricular activities must meet the following criteria: • a. The organization or activity must be approved by the school principal and must have an assigned faculty supervisor or sponsor; • b. The organization or activity must promote or serve the intellectual, cultural, personal, or physical development of the student in a manner that is consistent with the purposes of public education, the Board’s legal mandate, mission statement, policies, and regulations, and with applicable requirements of state and federal law; • c. The organization or activity must operate under and subject to general supervision of school officials; and • d. The nature of the organization and its activities are not inconsistent with and do not interfere with instructional activities of requirements. • Student participation or membership in such organization activities may be governed by the specific policies of the organization and is subject to review and approval by the principal. • Clubs and organizations which operate primarily for social purposes • are not allowed to function, to operate in, or to promote activities in • the name of the Huntsville City Schools. Use previous 3 years to set new targets for 2019-20 school year • Proposed targets for each school to provide equitable club offerings/extracurricular activities • 2% increase of participation for each extracurricular activity from previous years • Student Survey of wants and needs • What clubs would you like at your school? 2019 plan for equitable Club Offerings Extracurricular activities in Elementary & Middle School

Support Plan • Rack/Display cards to show what is offered • Annual workshop for elementary, middle, and high schools with lower participation rates • Meet with sponsors at each school – Fall 2019 • Standard norm for each club • Name, Mission, Sponsor, Principal signature • Data track in October & February • Final numbers in May 2019 plan for equitable Club Offerings Extracurricular activities in Elementary & Middle School

  5. Target Goals for each school

Power Hour for high school will be scheduled from 11:35 am until 12:38 pm each day for all HCS high schools. • ALSDE course 802111 – Schedule Filler, Grades 9-12 will be shredout to a local course titled Power Hour with no credit assigned. • All high school students will be assigned to a teacher in PowerSchool (iNow) during Power Hour. • Each high school student will be enrolled in a class in iNow titled Power Hour. • The teacher assigned to a student in PowerSchool (iNow) for Power Hour will know the student’s location if they are not in the assigned teacher’s classroom. • *This will enable students to attend Power Hour in another teacher’s classroom, if necessary. • Each teacher with a Power Hour class will have an assigned lunch time and students will only be able to attend lunch during their teacher’s assigned lunch time. 2019-20 Power Hour Changes
