FAA/JCAB ATN & AMHS Trial Presentation ATN 3.2 by H. Tran Varadero, Cuba May 2002
FAA/JCAB ATN/AMHS Trial • US FAA and the Japan JCAB agreed on a trial of the ATN routers and the AMHS, as defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) ATN Panel • ATN Router connectivity trial between U.S. and Japan started on September 2000 • Interoperability trial between the U.S. AMHS and the Japan AMHS, scheduled from January to November 2001
ATN AMHS Applications • AMHS will process ATS messages (e.g. Flight Plans, NOTAMs, etc…) and transmit to its end users. • Each AMHS will only process messages for its end users in its own domain. • AMHS will function in “bypass mode” for transient messages. • Several administrative domains may share a single AMHS. • AMHS also performs as a gateway for AFTN/CIDIN, as required.

FAA/JCAB ATN/AMHS Trial Objectives • ATN BIS Router Compatibility Tests • Ensure the routers could successfully communicate in an operation environment using prescribed ATN protocols (IDRP, CLNP).
FAA/JCAB ATN/AMHS Trial Objectives • AMHS Software Tests • Validate the operation of the AMHS software as defined in the ATN Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), • Demonstrate the ability of AMHS software to communicate with AFTN and ATN routers, • Verify the interoperability between the US AMHS software product and the Japanese AMHS software product.

Trial Schedule • ATN BIS Router Test • Completed by September 2000 • AMHS Software Test • Started January 2001 and ended November 2001
Test Results • ATN BIS Routers • Tests provided positive results that validated the interoperability capability of the routers. • The test validated that BIS router using X.25 sub-network to support ATN IDRP and CLNP protocols were performed as defined in the SARPs.
Test Results (Cont’d) • AMHS Software • Test demonstrated transport layer connection and upper layer connection interoperability • Minor adjustments were required, and successfully implemented, to satisfy the requirement of receiving maximum length AFTN messages.
