Professions such as medicine and philanthropy cannot thrive if we cease to be professionals committed first and foremost to the welfare of those we serve, becoming mere trade associations devoted to our own economic advantage. One of the defining features of a profession is adherence to beneficent ethical standards, even when it might not be the most convenient or immediately advantageous course of action. Yet ethics is not a subject to which the curricula of our schools and training programs have devoted a great deal of attention. It is vital, therefore, that all professional organizations stress the vital role of ethics and provide ethics education for their membership. - Richard B. Gunderman, “We Make a Life by What We Give”
