  2. Myth 2 • Myth is commonly used as a synonym for “misconception.” In our chapter, it means something else? What does it mean?

Myth 3 • Mythology underlies much of the work created in all disciplines of humanities • Mythology is the science or study of myths • Myth is a traditional story of unknown authorship that serves usually to explain some phenomenon of nature, the origin of humanity, or the customs, religious rites, etc.

  4. Myth 4 • In this unit we will talk about basic myths of heroes, power, difficult journeys, unspoiled garden, explanation and creation, childhood and popular mythology

  5. Archetypes in Mythology 5 • Are models by which people comprehend their experience and cope with task of being human, shared all over the world –collective unconscious • Hero as World Myth • Magic (weapons, words, numbers) • The Journey • The Garden

  7. Myths of Childhood 7 • The importance of Being Attractive and Rich

  8. Popular Mythology 8 • What does: “Nice guys finish last” mean? Is it true? • What does it tell us about a culture that says it?

  9. Proverbs 9 • Think of 2 family expressions, often-heard proverbs, advertising slogans, or political slogans. • What are some of these sayings? What do these phrases mean to you? • Ignorance is bliss • Haste makes waste

  10. Sayings 10 • “What goes around comes around” • “They’ll think of something” • “All you need is love” • “It must be fate” • “Isn’t that just like a man/woman?”

  11. Phrases are myths too! 11 • What are some axioms (truth taken for granted) you want to pass on to your children, family members, or friends?

  12. Stereotypes 12 • Do you believe stereotypes can be dispelled? • Police officers buying donuts and coffee, an example of perceived stereotypical behavior in the US

  13. Stereotypes 13 • Have you ever held a stereotype that you adjusted after experience that proved the belief to be inaccurate? How did this change?
