  1. ARINC 750 Reduced Transmitter Power AEEC Data Link Subcommittee Miami, FL July 24-26, 2012

  2. ARINC 750 Reduced TX Power • Aviation Spectrum Resources Inc. (ASRI) is responsible for managing the use of the frequencies in the sub-bands 128.825 to 132.0 MHz and 136.500 to 136.975 MHz. • The Aeronautical Frequency Committee (AFC) is responsible for providing guidance to ASRI for managing the use of the frequencies in the sub-bands. • The AFC recently formulated a transition strategy and implementation plan to assign additional 25 kHz channels to support VHF Digital Link (VDL) Mode 2 data link in the AOC sub-band 136.500 to 136.975 MHz.

  3. ARINC 750 Reduced TX Power • Results of the transition strategy and implementation plan: • VDL Mode 2 operations must co-exist with other ACARS (AM with MSK modulation), VDL Mode 2 data, and voice services • The implementation strategy considerations included shared vs. dedicated channels, potential AOC and ATC frequency sharing, transmitter power output, transmitter intermodulation products, and the relationship between frequency and physical separation.

  4. ARINC 750 Reduced TX Power • Results of the transition strategy and implementation plan (Cont.): • For co-site ground radio installations where the VDL antenna to VDL antenna separation is approximately 60 feet, at least 150 kHz of separation or five 25 kHz guard-band channels are required for a standard VDL transmitter power of 25 watts. • To prevent interference, tuned-cavity notch filters will be required for each VDL frequency that is operated in this co-site environment.

  5. ARINC 750 Reduced TX Power • Conclusions: • Aircraft avionics operating VDL Mode 2 on the ground should reduce their transmitter RF output power to support better spectral utilization and operational benefits. • This will have an impact of minimizing unnecessary spectral emissions resulting in reduced third order intermodulation products and reducing possible hidden transmitter effects on the CSC for enroute aircraft.

  6. ARINC 750 Reduced TX Power • Recommendation: • ARINC 750-4 Section 4.2.1 dealing with RF Power Output be modified as follows: • 4.2.1.1 Reduced RF Power Output •  When the VDR is operating in the VDL Mode 2 submode of the ARINC 750 Data mode while on the ground, the transmitter carrier power output should be equal to or less than 2 watts out of the antenna. •  COMMENTARY •  The avionics can use ARINC 750 Pin MP14B, Ground/Air Discrete, to determine if the aircraft in on the ground or airborne.

  7. Proposed Voice and VDL Frequency Assignments
