What is a dialectical journal? “The art of arriving at the truth through the exchange of logical arguments” (dictionary.com). A dialectical journal is used to arrive at the “truth” of a written work through the written response to quotations from that work. A quotation may be either narration or dialogue. You are NOT limited just to what the characters say.
What kinds of quotations should I choose? • Choose excerpts that connect and help develop the work’s theme(s): • Symbolism • Internal and external conflicts • Literary devices and strategies: • Simile • Metaphor • Imagery • Personification • Repetition • Characterization
What should I write about? • Select passages which reflect the novel’s theme(s). • Choose pieces that YOU find to be interesting or important. • Respond emotionally and intellectually to the excerpt. • Analyze the author’s purpose for writing this excerpt using this conflict, symbol, theme, or device. • Evaluate the effectiveness of this passage in supporting the development of theme.
How will I be graded? • You must have a total of 20 entries (approximately 3 – 4 per chapter). • Journals will be checked twice and are worth 100 points each. • Journals are part of your research paper process grade (15% of your total semester grade). • You will be graded for DEPTH of analysis and COVERAGE of material. • Dialectical journals are a REQUIREMENT for completion of the research paper.
