  2. Central Kant’s moral theory Categorical imperative a moral command or imperative that is unconditionally and universally binding imperative command Definition (merriam-webster)

  3. Definition of Humanity Formulation An action is right. The action treats persons (including oneself) as ends in themselves and not as mere means.

  4. Humanity Formulation • We should not treat someone as a mere means Negative requirement Deception Coercion

  5. Humanity Formulation • We should treat persons as ends in themselves → admit that persons have a special worth and value Positive requirement dignity

  6. Humanity Formulation Negative requirement Positive requirement ↑ Right action All action

  7. Definition of Universal Law Formulation An action is right. One can consistently conceive of everyone adopting and acting on the general policy (=maxim) of one’s action.

  8. Definition of Universal Law Formulation An action is right. One can consistently will that everyone act on that maxim.

  9. maxim (general policy) govern behavior

  10. How is “maxim” decided? • Formulate the maxim → “I will_____whenever___.” • Consider the possibility of everyone adopting and acting on the same maxim • If everyone adopts and acts on the maxim, the maxim is morally right

  11. Example Maxim Whenever I need money and can get it only by making a lying promise, I will borrow the money by making a lying promise. The action does not respect persons. → making a lying promise is morally wrong.
