2nd Round • Pass to the right • Paste dialogue rules into writing section of composition book • Use quotation marks around the spoken words. • Ex. “Wake up!” John said. “There’s a man in a gorilla suit outside.” • Punctuation THEN quotation marks • Ex. “The man in the gorilla suit,” exclaimed John, “is climbing my banana tree.” • Start a new paragraph for every new speaker. • INDENT paragraphs “What should we do?” “I don’t know, John,” Phil answered. “Call the zoo.” “Do you know the number?” • Do NOT put a period at the end of a quotation followed by things like she said or he asked. Use a comma, question mark, or exclamation point. • Ex. “I got the number in my speed dial,” Phil replied. • Correct any dialogue rules that are broken
3rd Round • Pass to right • Read every sentence • Make sure that all sentences are in the same tense • Past • Present
