How will writing & grammar be taught? • Write, write, write, write! • Daily journal free-writing (see the rules on the wall) • Daily mini-lessons covering conventions & grammar (editing checklist, wall charts, mentor texts, etc.) • Daily editing & revising where students revisit their free-writing to apply the new concepts • Students will choose pieces from their free-writing to turn into a polished, published piece
How will reading be taught? • Students need to read at least 25 books throughout the school year. • Students will respond weekly to me about what they are reading in their reading journal • Two days a week will be used for the teaching of reading • One to teach reading skills • One for reading and response • Students will recommend books to others and write at least one book review every nine weeks. • One larger project will be assigned every nine weeks
