Elisha Graves Otis (August 3, 1811 – April 8, 1861) He was an American industrialist, founder of the Otis Elevator Company, and inventor of a safety device that prevents elevators from falling in the hoisting cable fails.
He was born into a large family on a farm near Halifax. As a young man trying to do business, but ill health prevented succeed. In 1845, he moved to Albany, close to New York, and for three years he worked as a mechanic in a factory bed “tingley”, were he began to engage in railway safety brakes.
