What does it mean to be literate in my content literacy area?Social studies is ultimately about creating “civic competence” by bridging the social sciences and humanities to build “knowledge, skills, and attitude that enable students to be able to assume the ‘office of citizen’” (Sandmann & Ahern, 2002).

  3. What is backwards lesson design? Why is it important?Assessment depends on end-goals; you must know your end-goals before you begin in order to plan to reach them.

  4. How do I support students in growing from where they are to where they need to be, and how do I connect student assessment data, standards, and instruction?Recognition, modeling, adjustment of strategies

  5. Why are cultural and experiential connections so important to developing literacy?Literacy means knowledge, skills, and attitude; students must care about what is taught, and what better way than what they already understand and care about.

  6. What can I do to support all students in understanding my lessons?
