Sasha screams out to the others, “Hey watch this...I can do a flip off the edge into the water!” “C’mon then…lets see it,” yells Remi. They have been egging each other on all day. Pushing each other into the water and doing stupid things all afternoon. Even though everyone is having a great time, Lee is getting worried at some of the risks they are taking. Sasha decides to do the flip but slips on take off , lands on the ground with a massive thud and falls into the water. Lee and Remi rush into the creek. Sasha is not moving at all and does not appear to be breathing or showing any signs of life.

  7. THINGS TO CONSIDER! • What are some of the things Lee and Remi need to consider when rescuing Sasha out of the water? • Every second counts • Follow the DR ABC procedure • Only enter the water if they can swim

  8. SCRUBBY CREEK ACTION! • What you will need. • group of 4 • Copy of the DR ABC checklist • Talk through everything ( be specific ) • Determine who is playing the individual roles a) Sasha b) Lee c) Remi d) Observer

  9. What would you do? • Take the role of either Remi, Lee, Sasha or an observer…. • SASHA – they are the injured person ( must remain unconscious ) • LEE – First Aid leader. Must describe out loud what steps they are taking. Take the lead in DR ABC on the injured person • REMI – First Aid helper. Follows instructions and helps with suggestions if needed from Lee • OBSERVER – Watch what happens and has a checklist to make sure that all procedures have been followed.

  10. MASSIVE STACK! Matt and his mates are riding their bikes on a path surrounding a creek. Matt tries to skid as close to the end of a path as possible. The first time he goes close but on his second attempt to go closer, he hits a loose bit of concrete and has a massive stack and ends up in the water. His mates laugh but soon realise he is not moving.

  11. Imagine you are one of Matt’s friends. What might make the task of rescuing Matt difficult? • Amount of clothing he has on ( helmet ) (Do you jump in fully clothed or take clothes off?) • Things in the water you cant see eg. Branches, logs • Distance between you and Matt • Your physical limitations ( eg. Can you swim well enough to save him) • Can you handle Matts size and weight?

  12. If Matt is conscious, what could you do to assist with a rescue while remaining on dry ground? • Tree branches, • Towel • What else could you use?
