Background • The world as we know it is composed of atoms. • As human brains evolved over time, so did the ways humans looked at life. • As human thoughts changed, so did the atom.
Greek Atomism • The Greeks had a theory. The thought that the world had to be composed of small elements. • They did no experimenting so all they had was their theories. The decided that the there were 4 different atoms that made up everything in the world: Fire, Water, Wind & Earth.
Solid Sphere Model • The solid sphere model was proposed by John Dalton. • He stated that all matter is made of tiny, indivisible particles called atoms. • According to him, the atoms of the same element were all the same. • He also stated the atoms that are in compounds consist of whole number ratios.
Plum Pudding Model • The plum pudding model was proposed by JJ Thompson. • It was through the use of the cathode ray experiment that led to the discovery of protons and neutrons. • He said that atoms were made-up of big blob that had protons and neutrons sticking to it.
Nuclear Model • The nuclear model was discovered by Rutheford. • Through the use of the gold foil experiment, he discovered the nucleus. • It also led to the fact that atoms are really just empty space. • It was also able to explain why electrons spin around the nucleus.
