Romanian NG:Report Romanian NG Representatives: Anca VITCU (Chair), Anca IGNAT (vice-Chair/ Tresurer), Local coordinators (Sorana BOLBOACA, Liana BERA, Corina VERNIC), Web developer: Elena ROTARU (mandate until 2020) Membership 2019: 43 members (42 scientists, 1 PhD student) - We developed an Agenda to promote biostatistics among students at national level, a strategy to recruit them in the ISCB and connect them with the happenings in the related fields held in other universities from the European area. We evaluated what policies, topics, materials and tools may increase students’ interest in the field of biostatistics, what could motivate them to join RNG and participate at ISCB events, how we have to reshape our actions to better meet their expectations. In this context we prepare a Workshop on The role of biostatistics and bioinformatics in contemporary medicine and pharmaceutical research(advancements and limits, successes and pitfalls) to be organized as a Webinar coordinated by RNG-ISCB, Faculty of Computer Science & Faculty of Medicine (Iasi, Romania). Is dedicated to Master and PhD students in medicine, molecular and computational biology, biotechnology, computer science, mathematics; invited speakers would be experts from ISCB community and the event will be held during two sessions in October and December 2019. - A new RNG platform is in work based on modern web technologies and social network media with the aim to create a better connection with the relevant information provided in the fields as biostatistics, medical and pharmaceutical research, biotechnology development. - On a personal level, as usual, all RNG members are involved in projects developed in the universities they are affiliated, are members of national and international editorial boards, act as reviewers for reference books and as part of competition commissions.

2019 ISCB Conference Awards for ScientistsReport by Zdeněk Valenta • The applicants • The NG SC received a total of 6 eligible applications for the Conference Awards for Scientists (CASc) from 5 applicants, which is down from 14 as of last year • The applicants represented 5 countries, namely Bangladesh (1), China (1), Hungary (1), India (1) and Turkey (1) • It was a little disappointing to see the submission rate decreased so dramatically from the last year, although obviously the Joint ISCB/SSA Annual Conference in Melbourne represented a rare opportunity and was able to attract scientists truly from across the globe, e.g. from Cameroon, Kenya, Lebanon and Costa Rica • The winners • The NG SC decided to grant two ISCB CASc awards in 2019. Both winners achieved the score of 7 out of 10 possible • The first winner is Afsana Mimi from Bangladesh. Her contribution was entitled ‘Variable Selection for Censored Data Using Modified Correlation Adjusted coRrelation (MCAR) Scores’ • The second winning application was submitted by Attila Dávid from Hungary. His paper was entitled ‘Two new exact confidence intervals for a bounded negative binomial sampling scheme’. • Congratulation to the 2019 CASc Award winners!
