  2. Indian notes can be broadly classified into five categories namely, Early banknotes of India, British India notes, Princely state issues, colonial issues and Republic of India notes. Old notes of India issued by bank of Bengal, bank of Bombay and bank of Madras circulated only within the three respective presidencies.

  3. Currency notes in India during the times of British Raj depicted the portraits of Kings and Queens like Queen Victoria, King George V and King George VI. Some of the portrait notes of Queen Victoria were unifaced, which means they were printed only on ones side.

  4. Princely state issues included Osmania notes of Hyderabad. They were issued in various denominations like 1 rupee, 5 rupees, 10 rupees, 100 rupees and 1000 rupees. Colonial notes of India comprise of Indo-French and Indo-Portuguese issues. Some of these rare notes of India featured beautiful vignettes and portraits.

  5. Republic Notes of India can be further classified as the ones issued by Government of India, Reserve Bank of India, Persian Gulf Issues and Hajj Pilgrim issues. The Government of India has only issued 1 rupee banknotes so far while all the remaining notes are released by the Reserve Bank of India.

  6. By studying these notes of India right from early banknotes to the republic of India issues, one can learn about India’s history in detail. Apart from that, some of these rare notes of India have been auctioned for high values all over the world, making them even more desirable among collectors.
