Achieving Robust Message Dissemination in VANET: Challenges and Solutions J. Li and C. Chigan Presented By: Imranul Hoque
Motivation • Real-time collision avoidance • Warning technology • Road-to-Vehicle Communication • Difficult to build infrastructure • Existing Inter-Vehicle Communication • Dependent on the infrastructure • Challenge: Robust Message Dissemination • Solution: Apply MANET algorithms, but …
Robust Message Dissemination • 100% packet delivery to intended receivers and with acceptable overhead • Performance Metrics • In-time delivery ratio • Delivery time • Packet overhead • Unbounded Network: Identity based addressing model unfeasible • Mobility Pattern: How to forward messages? • Sparse Distribution: Partition recovery?
Content Based Addressing • Content of data packet is used to determine the intended receiver set • Model: • Data packet pushed to cluster-head • Mobile nodes send pull request to cluster-head • Intended receiver set defined by: speed, driving status, vehicle type, etc. • Issues: Cluster structure, pull process, probe frequency, etc.
Position Based Addressing • Vehicles equipped with GPS • Example: Send post crash warning to vehicles within a rectangular area (expressed as vectors of latitude and longitude) • Issues: GPS, dynamically moving area, etc.
Content Base Forwarding • Based on information filtering • If message valuable for traffic safety: accept & rebroadcast • Intended receiver & effective range calculated on fly: speed warning on slippery highway should be received by fast driving vehicles
Other Forwarding Schemes • Epidemic Routing: Gossip based scheme • Hierarchical Cluster Based Forwarding • High delivery ratio, low overhead • Management of cluster is difficult • Directional Flooding
Partition Handling • Vehicles in other directions • Issues: duration of contact, loop
Partition Handling (3) • Message Carrier
Conclusion • Addressing model defines group of intended receivers • Accuracy of the definition determines application level delivery ratio • Forwarding strategy determines packet overhead and communication level delivery ratio • Mobility prediction can be used to select the message carrier to cross the partitions
