About Ms. Ostlund • This is my 7th year teaching. I taught 4th grade for two years and four years in 5th grade. • I have been happily married for 13 years. We have two children. Our daughter Amaya will be going to UC Davis in September on the Pre-Med track and Landen, our son, has started fourth grade at Alisal in Pleasanton in a special needs classroom for children with Autism. • My husband is currently finalizing his first novel and studying to be a high school math teacher.

Our Class Expectations/Social Contract In our class we will… • be kind to each other • be resepectful • listen to others • be honest • follow the Golden Rule • use good manners • compromise
Classroom Management • Positive Reinforcement - tickets, blue character trait tickets, table points, cube jar, classroom economy • Consistent and fair expectations • Logical Consequences/Individual needs basis • School Rules- color coded parent contact slips that match the 4 rules
Our Class Schedule • School starts at 8:25 a.m. • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday dismissal is at 2:04; Thursday and Friday at 3:04 p.m. • Music on Wednesday • Library on Thursday • PE on Tuesday-students dress appropriately • Extra PE on Friday (tentatively) • Technology integrated throughout curriculum
5th Grade – Preparation for Middle School “You are free to make your own choices, you are not free from the consequences of those choices.”
Tests and Progress Reports • Math tests will be sent home to be returned signed by parent. Students are expected to complete test corrections with the signed test. Due date is at the discretion of the teacher • As other tests are graded, they will be sent home for you to sign and return the following day
Homework Homework is due completed on a daily basis and will usually consist of a combination of: • 20 minutes of nightly reading/reading journal • One page out of their math workbook, watch video of next lesson, digital quick check (subject to change) • A biweekly “Math Story" for math • Unfinished classwork • An article summary • Paragraph of the Week
Average Workload cont. They may also occasionally have: • Social Studies or Science assignments • Special projects • "Word of the Day" assignments • State Geography assignments • Oral Language Presentations (OLPs) • Book Commercials Homework should not take more than 50 minutes to complete. Please contact me if it is taking longer.
Homework Policy If it is turned in late, students will: -lose participation points -be completing unfinished work during Fun Friday
General Policies • There is general information about the school’s birthday policy and test taking policy on your student’s desk • For the first trimester you will receive a weekly progress report on Monday that is to be signed and returned on Tuesday
Outdoor Education and Field Trips OUTDOOR ED: January 13-17 • Informational Night: October 1 from 5:30-6:30ish in the MPR Location is Camp Koinonia in the Santa Cruz mountains FIELD TRIPS • We will need drivers/chaperones! We have at least two field trip that requires drivers • Please fill out the volunteer and driver forms (at the front table), make a copy of your driver’s license, and a copy of your insurance coverage and return to me
How I Can Help My Child? • Help them find a quiet place where they can work on homework. • Have them read A LOT of books at their level • Organization: Binders and Homework • Let them do the work; be there for support and some guidance; help with editing and finding resources if needed • Eat well, sleep well, daily exercise • Pack extra snacks and water bottle • Sweatshirt (air conditioner is cold) • Gradual release of responsibility….middle school is just around the corner!
Volunteering I LOVE VOLUTEERS! • If you would like to volunteer in the classroom you must fill out all of the required paperwork (paperwork is on the back table) • Please check the list on the back table of anticipated volunteer roles and sign up for what you are interested in doing. These roles include: Room Parent(s), Art in Action Volunteer, End of Year Activities Coordinator, Prep and grading at home, and those who would like to volunteer in the classroom
