Newton’s Laws of Motion

Newton’s Laws of Motion. NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION (LAW OF INERTIA). Anything at rest stays at rest and anything in motion stays in motion unless an unbalanced force acts on the object. TERMS:. Inertia - Resistance to a change in motion. Dependent on mass.

  1. Newton’s Laws of Motion

  2. NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION (LAW OF INERTIA) Anything at rest stays at rest and anything in motion stays in motion unless an unbalanced force acts on the object.

  3. TERMS: • Inertia- Resistance to a change in motion. Dependent on mass. • Mass -How much space an object occupies (unit= kilogram) • Force- Any push or pull on an object.(vector quantity) • Weight- the pull of gravity acting on an object (It’s also a force)

  4. MASS ≠ WEIGHT

  5. WEIGHT weight = mass x gravity Fg= mg unit: kg∙m/s2 or N (Newton)

  6. NEWTON’S SECOND LAW OF MOTION • The acceleration produced by a net forceis directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to the mass of the object. Net Force= Total force Fnet = 700N + -100N Fnet = 600N F=100N Fg= 700N

  7. Newton's second law FORMULA: a= FnetorFnet=ma m a=acceleration (m/s2) F=net force (N) m=mass (kg)

  8. What is the force necessary to give a 3.0 kg mass, initially at rest, an acceleration of 5.0 m/s2? F = ma F = 3kg(5m/s2) F = 15N F=15 N

  9. NEWTON’S THIRD LAW OF MOTION • For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
