NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION (LAW OF INERTIA) Anything at rest stays at rest and anything in motion stays in motion unless an unbalanced force acts on the object.
TERMS: • Inertia- Resistance to a change in motion. Dependent on mass. • Mass -How much space an object occupies (unit= kilogram) • Force- Any push or pull on an object.(vector quantity) • Weight- the pull of gravity acting on an object (It’s also a force)
MASS ≠ WEIGHT
WEIGHT weight = mass x gravity Fg= mg unit: kg∙m/s2 or N (Newton)
NEWTON’S SECOND LAW OF MOTION • The acceleration produced by a net forceis directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to the mass of the object. Net Force= Total force Fnet = 700N + -100N Fnet = 600N F=100N Fg= 700N
Newton's second law FORMULA: a= FnetorFnet=ma m a=acceleration (m/s2) F=net force (N) m=mass (kg)
What is the force necessary to give a 3.0 kg mass, initially at rest, an acceleration of 5.0 m/s2? F = ma F = 3kg(5m/s2) F = 15N F=15 N
NEWTON’S THIRD LAW OF MOTION • For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
