Scientific Notation Used to represent very large and very small numbers. Always has a coefficient that is 1≤x<10 and multiplied by a power of 10. ONLY ONE number to the left of the decimal- canNOT be 0!
Scientific Notation Exponent/ Power of 10 coefficient • Positive Exponent = Big Number • Change to standard form by moving decimal to the right • Negative Exponent = Small Number • Change to standard form by moving decimal to the left 4.6 x 104

* Open Flap * On Top flap – write the following 1st Way: Change each to standard form Do the addition or subtraction Change back to Scientific Notation (4.2 * 103) + (1.2 * 102) 4200 + 120 4320 4.32 * 103
* Open Flap * On bottom flap – write the following 2nd Way: Move decimal so that each has the same exponent Add or Subtract coefficients Leave exponent alone – check to make sure answer is in Scientific Notation (4.2 * 103) + (1.2 * 102) (4.2 * 103) + (.12 * 103) 4.2 + .12 * 103 4.32 * 103
* Open Flap * On Top flap – write the following MULTIPLY the coefficients ADD the exponents Check answer – Is it written in Scientific Notation?
* Open Flap * On bottom flap – write the following (4.6 * 104)(3.5 * 102) (4.6)(3.5) * 104+2 16.1 * 106 Written in Scientific Notation? 16.1 * 106+1 1.61 * 107
* Open Flap * On Top flap – write the following DIVIDE the coefficients SUBTRACT the exponents Check answer – Is it written in Scientific Notation?
