Haiku Poetry. Hai -Ku (Two syllables). "Haiku" is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme. The syllable patter is: 5-7-5

  2. "Haiku" is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. • Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. • The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. • The lines rarely rhyme.

  3. The syllable patter is: 5-7-5 • Since Haikus only have 3 lines to work with, the poems are normally written for one simple thing. • Example: a raindrop, a season, an animal, a snowflake etc…. • What are some topics that you can think of?

  4. Here's a Haiku to help you remember: • I am first with five • Then seven in the middle -- • Five again to end.

  5. What am I? • Green and speckled legs, • Hop on logs and lily pads • Splash in cool water. • In a pouch I grow, • On a southern continent -- • Strange creatures I know.

  6. Your task….. • Practice Writing 3 Haiku Poems of your choice • Practice Writing 2 “What Am I?” Haikus of your choice • Choose your favorite 2 Haikus for publishing • (1 What Am I Haiku + 1 Regular Haiku)
