Theory of Multiple Intelligences From Howard Gardner’s "Frames of Mind”
Why learn about this? • People learn things in different ways • Will get students more ‘on board’ and will make your lesson more dynamic and exciting • Helps a student to get a more complete view and understanding of a subject • Should learn about how you think/learn • Ideally, get the students to do the same! • Study skills
Visual/Spatial Logical/Mathematical • A pawn moves like…. • Playing a move in your mind beforehand. • Chess puzzles. • What are your options with each turn? Verbal/Linguistic • Reading through a rule book • How do you set up a game? • Who wins the game? • “The horse moves in an L-shape from a given spot.” Musical/Rhythmic How to play CHESS • Create a rhyme, song, or anagram about the rules. • Acting out the pieces as though you were the queen, knight, etc. • Teaching someone else how to play the game. • Playing yourself • Talking to yourself Kinesthetic Interpersonal Intrapersonal
Group Practice: How would you Teach the Following Topics Using the 7 Intelligences?
Questions? Some final thoughts… • The 7 intelligences do not all need to be used to teach one lesson! They are simply different strategies we can and should use as we construct lesson plans to ensure that we are catering to all students. • Students who have stronger kinesthetic intelligence may not understand concepts well if you lecture, or if you simply provide visuals, and vice versa. • Students who are strong in one intelligence may not be in others, so helping them to use and build on all seven intelligences throughout the summer is important. • Remember that what works/worked for you may not necessarily work for others…vary it up! Use this to SLOOOOOW DOOOOWN!
Homework for TOMORROW • Complete the Multiple Intelligences test (will discuss it at the beginning of the “Skills to Build” section tomorrow). • Shouldn’t take more than 10 min.
