  2. January 2010– Mapping Initiative • Researched best practices for broadband programs • Identified Providers and began collecting data • Made the foundation Map • Employed Independent third party validation • Update the mapping twice a year

October 2010 – Office is Created • Outreach and Development focusing on awareness and education • Expanding Our Data Collection • Fall 2011 – Phase I - Collaboration • Work with the Area Development Districts to have a Statewide presence. • Develop a network to facilitate swift communications with local communities and vendors

Spring 2012 – Phase II – Collection of Adoption Data • Understand each region’s needs and objectives through data collection to provide info on utilization to improve social and economic development • Administer five targeted outreach workshops, each tailored to specific region • Create broadband utilization profile for each region

  5. 2013-2014 – Phase III – Assist Communities • Using previous data we are to assist targeted communities with improving their broadband awareness, value and adoption rates. • Develop educational material for local action groups • Promote the sustainable adoption , utilization and support of broadband • Develop outreach campaigns for community stakeholders and general public

AVAILABILITY 91.5% OR 3,890,0000 Kentucky Citizens have access to broadband - (Kentucky Ranks 40th in availability) 8.5% do not have access to broadband ~400,000 people – this doesn’t mean they don’t access broadband, it just means they don’t have access at their home.   11. UTILIZATION 1.4 Million HAVE ACCESS to broadband but DON’T use it. Reasons: 1.) Its TOO EXPENSIVE 2.)They DON’T see a value in broadband -We may be able to help with expense, but we know we have a responsibility to educate those that DON’T see the need for broadband.   12. - We are working to empower and educate the Commonwealth about Broadband and its potential to improve the lives of all citizens. - Universal Access has meant that all citizens have the opportunity to have electric service, telephone service – and now, should mean broadband service. Broadband needs to be viewed as a critical, necessary resource for ALL Americans. So that ALL Commonwealth citizens can have a better quality of life – broadband can improve the way we live, work, learn, govern and compete . With this Goal the Federal Government has made funding available to the States. We are using these funds to better understand how broadband services are used in the Commonwealth today.   13. - What are the needs of your constituents? How are they using broadband today? How might they reap the benefits tomorrow? - The Goals of our Office: - To Increase the use of broadband across the Commonwealth. To Increase the awareness among our citizens of the benefits of using broadband, and: Improving the quantity and quality of information and content that is available to broadband users in the Commonwealth.   14. Our future, in every walk of life, will depend on this new infrastructure. Whether available down the hall or down the street, we must all, sooner or later, embrace it, just as we have electricity, rail lines, and our roads. Those who embrace it faster have an advantage, Personally, and economically. A student can attend a college without stepping foot onto campus Entrepreneurs can operate a small business from their home Any Doctor, anywhere, could help a patient no matter their location A newly diagnosed individual could research options for treatment Technical Professionals can live in Kentucky and work ANYWHERE Broadband IS the Highway to more opportunities TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS FOR 21ST CENTURY GOVERNMENT

  15. WITH YOUR HELP, beginning today, we want to: Take a closer local look at the regions of Kentucky. Determine the areas where we should focus our attention. Figure out how to best address the need to make broadband services more available to Kentucky citizens . Help people learn about, and realize the benefits of broadband.
