  3. Policies / Costs • Neutral • Is only needed an ASN to be a member. • Zero cost if peering with Portuguese Research Network (every member does). • Doesn’t manage members’ circuits. • Doesn’t buy transit from any member.

  4. Members • September 2002: 17 • Lost 4 members in the last 2 years (one merge, 2 shutdowns, one foreign ISP disconnecting) • New members in the last 2 years: 2 • 2 new members in the process of joining (one has a 3rd generation mobile license)

  5. Infrastructure • 2 addresses: Lisbon and Oporto (not a distributed IX). • 2 Telcos have STM-16 deployment capability to Lisbon’s address. • Nobody started yet to use facilities in Oporto.

  6. Infrastructure @Lisbon • Using only 2 racks (space for growing exists!) • Layer-2 switching on 2 Cisco Catalysts • Ports: • 96 (Ethernet/FastEthernet) • 4 (GigabitEthernet)

  7. Projects • Multicast Experiments • Start of Gigapix(v6) • Currently only 2 members have IPv6 (on separate boxes) • Third member will join soon (already has his /32 from RIPE too!) • Separate VLAN

  8. Traffic • Peak: 140 Mbps • Average traffic: around 80 Mbps

  9. Problems… • Route Management between peers is made using a Mailing List (without any “strong authentication”) • Poor Compliance with policies registered in RIPE DB • Poor Feedback on members needs.
