  2. SYMPTOMS OF PNEUMONIA • High fever • Chills or shaking • Chests pain which is worsened on inhalation or coughing • Fast heart rate • Less movement on the affected side of the chest

  3. MICROBE THAT CAUSES PNEUMONIA • Mostly caused by Streptococcus Pneumoniae. • BACTERIAL DISEASE • Can be caused by a virus or fungi • Comment: Viral Pneumonia is common in children

  4. WHAT DOES THE MICROBE DO TO IT’S HOST CELL • Streptococcus does not produce toxins • Highly invasive • Alters normal metabolism of host cell (harmful effects) • Streptococcus secrete exotoxins which damage host cell

  5. HOW THE MICROBE IS TRANSMITTED • Fluids • Sharing Drinks • Tissues • Hankies • Coughs • Utensils • Sneezes

  6. TREATMENTS Some cases are dealt without hospitalization • Oral Antibiotics • Rest • Fluids • Homecare Some people do need hospital care

  7. PREVENTIONS • No smoking • Antibiotics • Pneumococcal Vaccination • Good Diet • Influenza Shots • Practice Good Hygiene

  8. STATISTICS/DATA • 55,000 every year • 5.6 million every year in USA • Leading killer disease for under 5’s • 8278 hospitalizations in NZ

  9. EXTRA FACTS • Kills more people • Pneumonia affects tissues of lungs • Can occur year round • Boys are more in danger • Mostly in crowded areas
