RomansPaul’s Exposition of “Salvation by Grace Through Faith” Lesson 11 VI. God’s Righteousness: PROVIDING FOR MAN’S NEEDS Romans 8:1-39
A. Assurance of Salvation From Sin and Death Romans 8:1-9 • Condemnation under the Law removed by Christ and His law (1-3) • Paul answers his question from 7:24, “Who will deliver me from this body of death?” • Answer: Christ Jesus (1) • There is no condemnation to those -- • Who do not walk according to the flesh (sinful living) • Who do walk according to the Spirit (in obedience) • Made free from the law of sin and death (2) • God, by sending His own Son, condemned sin in the flesh (3)
A. Assurance of Salvation From Sin and Death Romans 8:1-9 • Purpose of the Law fulfilled in obedient Christians (4,5) • Because of what Christ has done (living a sinless life in the likeness of man), the righteousness of the law has been fulfilled (4) • But, only in those who live according to the Spirit, not the flesh (4) • Minds set on things of the flesh, live according to the flesh (5) • Minds set on things of the Spirit, live by the things of the Spirit (5)
A. Assurance of Salvation From Sin and Death Romans 8:1-9 • Righteous men can avoid the consequences of the flesh (6-8) • To be carnally minded is death (6) • To be spiritually minded is life and peace (6) • The carnally minded is: • Enmity against God (7) • It is not subject to the law of God (7) • Cannot please God (8)
A. Assurance of Salvation From Sin and Death Romans 8:1-9 • The Spirit “dwells” in us to help us overcome sin (9) • Christians are not in the flesh but in the Spirit (9) • If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His (9)
B. The Opportunity to Serve God with Body and Spirit Romans 8:10-14 • Christians value spiritual activity, not fleshly (10) • If Christ is in you, the body is dead (10) • The body will be unresponsive to sin • But, the Spirit is life because of righteousness (10) • Life as a Christian is dependent on the indwelling of Christ and the Spirit in our minds (8:1,2) • It is by FAITH that Christ is to dwell in Christians (Eph. 3:17) • Faith comes by hearing the Word of Christ as men were guided by the Spirit
B. The Opportunity to Serve God with Body and Spirit Romans 8:10-14 • The body also serves God if it is under control (11) • “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” (11) • All physical bodies will die, but Christians can be confident of a new life beyond this present life -- one of the precious rewards of being “in Christ”
B. The Opportunity to Serve God with Body and Spirit Romans 8:10-14 • The Spirit leads us to use our bodies appropriately (12-14) • Therefore, brethren, we are debtors -- not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh (12) • If you live according to the flesh, you will die (13) • If you live by the Spirit, you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live • “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (14)
C. Confidence In Our Sonship Romans 8:15-17 • The Christian has exchanged fear for confidence (15,16) • As sons of God, we have not received the spirit of bondage (to fear) but the spirit of adoption as we cry “Father (Abba), Father” (15) • The gospel, however, is a law of grace and freedom from such fear • The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (16)
C. Confidence In Our Sonship Romans 8:15-17 • Children of God are confident of blessings even in suffering (17) • As children of God, we are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ (17) • However, if we suffer for the gospel as He suffered, we will also be glorified with Him (17)
