  1. Brainstorm • Think of some of the most successful companies in the world and brainstorm a list of qualities or traits that help make that company successful. • After the lead balloon challenge and a few demos, what do I think I know about gravity so far. Brainstorm a list (It’s ok to be wrong)

  2. Whirligig Challenge Criteria: To design a new Whirligig toy for the cereal box company that falls slower than their current design. • Constraints: • The whirligig template has to fit on the back of the cereal box. • The only materials available are the cereal box and paper clips. (assume that people will have scissors to cut out the whirligig template from the cereal box)

  3. Whirligig Messing About… Desired Consumer Outcomes Background Research (Assessing Current Reality) No Changes or Experimenting!!!

  4. Whirligig Challenge • Agenda: • Messing About- In small groups, learn the current whirligig product and it’s strengths and weaknesses. • Hold a “company meeting” with your class period to discuss what you learned after using the original whirligig design.Discuss all variables and parts of the whirligig that could be changed for the final design. • Divide into smaller sub-groups to design a test for one particular element (variable) of the whirligig. • Run small group experiments to learn what new design features should be included in the final class design. Remember to test ONLY ONE VARIABLE! • Write up your experiment results for the group to analyze. • Meet with the entire company (class) again to agree on a new design and build the final whirligig based on each group’s recommendations.

  5. Journal Requirements Sections need to be in order! Whirligig Challenge Use pages 44 and 45 in your book for help on your experiment & Write-up!! Problem Statement: Materials 1. 2. 3. Don’t forget a title! Skip a line between each section Procedure needs to show extreme DETAIL for your readers. (think PBJ Lab) Underline all section headings Hypothesis: Procedure: 1. 2. 3. 4. Design a data table that will be ready to fill in with all trials and an average before you start testing! Data:

  6. Journal Requirements Whirligig Challenge Cont. Graph with a ruler and SULTAN requirements Graph must be on graph paper and pasted into your journal. Graph: Organize your results in a conclusion paragraph for your company partners to read. Use WRAP IT UP (journal entry) to organize your conclusion paragraph Conclusion:

  7. How to Write an Effective Problem Statement: • How does independent var. affect dependent var. • How does ____________ affect the time it takes a whirligig to fall?

  8. IDEO COMPANY VALUES • Stay focused • One voice at a time • Differ judgment • Build on the ideas of others • Fail often in order to succeed sooner
