Functions of Language • There are seven roles that language fits into in communication • Instrumental • Regulatory • Informative • Heuristic • Interactional • Personal language • Imaginative
Instrumental • The speaker uses language to obtain what he/she needs or desires • Examples: • “Want to come over and hang out Friday?” • “Hey I’m going to the game this weekend, want to join me?”
Regulatory • Using language to control or regulate the behavior of others • Closely related to instrumental • Examples: • “Please pass the salt.” • “Bring some snacks when you come over.”
Informative • Language used to communicate information or report facts • Examples: • “Come over in about half an hour.” • “At 5 o’clock I’m going to need you to shut off the oven for me.”
Heuristic • Using language to acquire knowledge and understanding • Examples: • “Hey, what’s the answer to number 4?” • “Did I carry the four wrong or did I completely mess up this problem?”
Interactional • Using language to establish or define social relationships • Examples: • Being courteous and kind when you have guests/friends/family over • Treat your friends like you would want to be treated
Personal Language • Language is used to express individuality and personality • Examples: • Saying something in a joking manner like “Don’t forget to bring some cash for snacks at the game like you did last time.”
Imaginative • Using language to express oneself artistically or creatively • Examples: • “Why thank you good sir.” • Being creative or “prettying up” something in a fancy fashion when speaking
