The SMDP Project • The Strategic Management and Development Project for Selected Elementary Schools began in the Archdiocese with a strategic planning seminar on August 25, 2009 • Forty schools invited, 26 applied, 16 chosen • Enrollment needs • Status and capacity to successfully complete project

  3. The SMDP Project • Funded jointly by the schools and a 50/50 matching grant from the Legacy for Our Mission campaign • 4-year intensive consulting program with Catholic School Management, Inc. (CSM) • Designed to increase the ability of the school community to market the school for image, enrollment and resources in an increasingly competitive environment and a challenging economy • A similar project was completed successfully with 6 interparochial high schools between 1993 and 1997

  4. The SMDP Project “The project involves pastors, administrators, teachers, school commission members and parents working together on a preferred future for their school”

The SMDP Project • Seminars held each year on focus for the year • CSM Consultants hold tracking meetings at each school about every 6 weeks (6 times a year) to provide guidance and to record progress of local committees (with written follow-up) • CSM is accompanied on each visit by staff liaisons from the Office of Catholic Education or Office of Stewardship and Development • CSM gives formal mid-year and end-year reports to OCE/OSD

  6. The SMDP Project The 17 schools now involved in the Project are:

SMDP Objectives Year 1 • Seminars 1 & 2 Strategic Plan and Enrollment • Develop foundational documents: Mission, Philosophy, Vision, Profile of the Grad at Grad • Begin strategic planning process in conjunction with required school improvement process • Begin comprehensive enrollment management programs: Market research, recruitment, admissions, retention, justification of purchase decision, parent satisfaction survey

SMDP Objectives Year 2 • Seminar 3, Comprehensive Communication • Initiate comprehensive communication plan: Case statement, newsletters, electronic communication, website, annual report, etc. • Continue to review/implement strategic plan • Continue enrollment management strategies SMDP Objectives

SMDP Objectives Year 3 • Seminar 4, Elementary Annual Fund • Establish annual development objectives: Annual fund plan, record-keeping, gift processing, etc. • Continue to review/implement strategic plan • Continue to implement enrollment management strategies; write a formal enrollment plan • Continue to maintain comprehensive communication plan and strategies

SMDP Objectives Year 4 • Seminar 5, Elementary Planned Giving Program • Establish annual development objectives: Design planned giving plan, enhance annual giving, etc. • Continue to implement enrollment management plan and strategies • Continue to maintain comprehensive communication plan and strategies • Renew the strategic plan for the next 3 years

Outcomes of SMDP Processes • Formalized planning processes in place • Greater involvement of people in the life/mission of the school • Stronger School Commission committee structure to sustain comprehensive development and enrollment programs • Increased ability of the school community to market the school for image, enrollment and resources – to determine own future • Better communication strategies (including electronic) • Strengthened enrollment • Comprehensive development program in place: • Annual fund • Planned giving • Return on investment approximately 6 times the initial investment
