  2. Significance of the title Companion picture is supposed to be like a mirror so this shows that the conversation Stryver and Carton are having is similar to Darnay’s and Dr. Manette. Except in Stryver’s on “cocky little way”.

Summary • This Chapter takes place the same night that Darnay made his declaration to Dr. Manette. • Mr. Stryver and Mr. Carton and working in their chambers when Stryver tell’s Carton that he intends to marry Lucie. • Carton is described as drinking Heavily at the news, and tells Stryver this does not upset him • Stryver suggests that Carton himself find “some respectable woman with a little property,” and marry her, lest he end up ill and penniless.

  5. Literary devices • Foreshadowing- Stryver is surprised that Carton approves of his love towards Lucie. This could come back when / if Carton steps up for himself.-145 • Imagery – “the prosperous patronage with which he said it, made him look twice as big as he was, and four times as offensive,”- 146
