College & Career Readiness ProgramYear 5 of grant with John A. Logan College • Diagnose College Readiness • Reduce Remediation • Align Curriculum • Provide Resources & Academic Support
Why do our students need remediation? • Scores on ACT, ASSET, or COMPASS tests place students in MATH 052 or 062 • Students did not have math during their senior year. • Students have not completed coursework through Algebra 2. • Students are not retaining knowledge. • Increased absences and mobility rate affect academics. • Changes in college requirements over the past 15 years – Algebra 2 equivalent now remedial but once was a credited college class. • More students are attending college due to weak economy and lack of available jobs.
Curriculum Alignment - Algebra • High schools in program have been aligning Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 level courses with JALC and with each other. • Resources have been developed to support a common curriculum and we would like to share them with others who teach Algebra at both high schools and middle schools. • What should an Algebra 1 course look like, and what are the expectations for classes critical to college preparation.
Mathematics Specifics • Reduce the number of students who need to take non-credit classes at college. • Math 052 – Algebra 1 • Math 062 – Algebra 2 • John A. Logan Mathematics department developed a Mathematics Placement Review book for those classes with outline of topics and sample problems • Team of high school and college teachers created binders of materials for targeted topics to use for review and remediation
College Readiness Interventions Target Population – Juniors & Seniors • Summer SmartMove at John A. Logan College • Students invited to attend • Targeted review & remediation • Students may test out of remedial courses after completion of program • Mentoring and support when students start at JALC
College Readiness Interventions • Onsite academic programs at the high schools • After school and summer tutoring programs • New classes created at high schools using resources developed through program • Credit Recovery options • Visits by JALC teachers and staff to discuss career options and college placement.
Expectations for College Readiness Courses • Rigor of Algebra 1 courses • Important to demonstrate Algebra proficiency • How much should homework count? Carbondale sample: • Weighting grades based on Tests/Quizzes vs. Homework • 80% Tests/20% Homework – anything above Alg 1 • 75% Tests/25% Homework – Algebra 1 Freshman level • 70% Tests/30% Homework – Remedial classes
Why Algebra Probes? • Monitor progress on key Algebra topics • Are students retaining skills? • Growth Model Measurement • Response to Intervention RtI • Student/Teacher future evaluation • Special Education Goal Setting for IEP • Related to Common Core Movement
How to administer • Paper/Pencil – bubble sheet included • Online applications – must input questions • Student response systems • Algebra 1 – 15 minutes • Algebra 2 – 20 minutes • No Accommodations

Notes: • Probes & tests do not cover a comprehensive list of Algebra topics • Pre- and Post- tests are not necessarily appropriate as a final exam – just as a longer monitoring tool. • Algebra 2 probes are much harder than Algebra 1 • The materials are for your use as you see fit. • No data collection will be done to compare teachers or schools. • 10 probe versions included – do as often as you like. • Question are in same order on each probe.
Spread the resources and see if we can set a standard for Algebra 1 throughout our region.
