PPAS College Office Guide to applying Senior Classes Fall 2019
Using Naviance • ALL of the colleges you plan on applying to MUST be listed in Naviance, even if NO documents will be submitted through Naviance • All teacher recommendation must be requested through Naviance. * outside recommenders email in separately • Look-out for TASKS assigned to you from the College Office, i.e. Ms. P You cannot add colleges last minute without our office or teachers knowledge – otherwise no documents or letters will be submitted Common App & Naviance must be matched
Save time on your college applications!! • CommonAppis used by over 600 colleges/universities • Applications are completed entirely online • Fill it out once and send to all of your CommonApp schools • (Note: There are often supplements) • Keep in mind: Fee waivers are NOT available for the CommonApp. If you check-off that you are eligible for a fee waiver, it must be sent to the college separately. • Need help with CommonApp?Visit the Applicant Help Center https://appsupport.commonapp.org/ics/support/splash.asp
Self-Reporting instead of transcripts • Some Colleges like Rutgers and Purdue are requesting that applicants Self Report their grades in place of supplying official transcripts. • This option of self reporting will appear on the CommonAPP or when applying to the college directly. • You will need your most recent transcript to self report • You must honestly report grades that you see listed on your transcript, so if you failed 11th grade APUSH, you cannot leave it off • Colleges can rescind acceptance letters based on inaccurately reported grades since they request FINAL OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS!
Applying to CUNY and SUNY schools • The State University of New York • Apply through SUNY website (or some schools are on CommonApp) • Apply to multiple campuses with same application (supplements often required) • Pay $50 fee per school (fee waivers cover up to 4 schools) • Ask college office to send counselor form, test scores, transcripts, and any other requirement materials The City University of New York • Completed entirely online • Apply for up to 6 schools on one application • Pay ONE $65 fee (PPAS has limited number of fee waivers) • Include OSIS # • Ask college office to send test scores
WRITE ESSAYS • Your essay is your chance to show who you are andhow well you write • Speak honestly and let your personality shine through – write about something important to you • Write in your own voice—don’t try to sound impressive; don’t overuse a thesaurus! • Submit polished and thoroughly edited essays – have many eyes look at it • Keep it focused and make sure it answers the prompt • Essays don’t always have to be school or arts-related • Consider writing school-specific essays for reach schools See the PPAS college website for additional essay tips
