  2. Aim To introduce students to equipment known collectively as ‘Small Gear’.

  3. Learning OutcomesAt the end of the session students will be able to: • Identify the applicable legislation • Recognise various types of small gear • Recognise tools used for forcing entry • Understand the health and safety considerations.

  4. Legislation • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 • The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992.

  5. Two categories of small gear • General purpose tools - Multiple uses • Special purpose tools - Specific function.

  6. Examples of general purpose tools.

  7. Saws • Carpenters ( General purpose ) • Hacksaw • Floorboard Wheel type Cockerel type.

  8. Example of a cockerel type floorboard saw in use. Notice the method of cutting the boards along the top of the joist, to enable repair. And also the location of the concealed gas pipe.

  9. Axes • Firefighting • Aircraft • Felling.

  11. Method of forcing entry into a building using an axe, not having consideration for the surroundings.

  12. Hammers • Sledge • Lump • Claw.

  13. Examples of various types of hammers Above is a club hammer with bolster chisel, and right is a selection of sledge hammers.

  14. Ceiling hook Various uses; • Turning over operations • Removing overhead debris • Operation of ‘firefighter switches’ • Breaking glass windows.

  18. Stirrup pump • Used in conjunction with the chimney nozzle • To extinguish fires within the confines of a chimney.

  26. Health and safety considerations • Wear correct personal protective equipment • Inspect tool before use • Use correct tool for the job in hand • Make space to work in • Try to work in a well lit area.
