  1. Legislation Writing 101

  2. Why should I learn? • You are representing students in your college and across the university. • Studentsdeserve to have their voices heard through you. • You matter…nuff said • Sometimes things are missed or overlooked by the Senate body

  3. Remember… • You were elected for a reason. You can make changes to K-State! • You don’t need a committees approval to send legislation to Senate. • A piece of legislation DOES NOT have to be authored by a committee. • Interns and cabinet members can write legislation too!

  4. Wording • Resolutions are resolved • Bills are enacted • The whereas clauses provide background, clarity, and reasoning behind the bill or resolution. • They don’t have to be long or complicated, just clear and concise. • Enacted clauses should bring about what you are changing • Resolved clauses should be what you are in support of

  5. Formatting • Times New Roman font, size twelve • Side numbering in Times New Roman • Bold and capitalize all whereas’s, bill title, enacted • If proposing amendments to statues, by-laws, or constitution be sure to strike through what you are taking out and highlight or italicize what you are changing.

  6. Role of Senate Ops • The role of Senate Ops in this process is to make sure legislation sounds and looks like it should. • We fix grammatical, mathematical, or wording errors. • All legislation is due to my mailbox in OSAS or email by 6pm Tuesday night.

  7. But Hannah I’m stuck… • Good news! There are great people and resources that you can use to help you. • Bill Harlan-he’s awesome go and chat with him if your having trouble.
