  1. Guess What We Learned Today!! 2nd Grade - August Edition Gifted

  2. Monday: August 12, 2019 • We have many things in common with each other. • Ideas can make us different, but they can also make us special. We should spend time with our ideas and watch them grow, so that maybe one day they will change the world! • We figured out the mystery numbers in a math puzzle by using our knowledge of doubles.

  3. Tuesday, August 13, 2019 • We know the difference between an equation and an expression. • We discovered that doubles always have a sum that is an even number. • Negative numbers came up in our discussion after we tried to find the answer to 3-5 during our math teaser. • We talked about where we would see negative numbers in real life such as a diver going below sea level or the temperature dropping below freezing.

  4. Wednesday, August 14, 2019 • Can you believe there are people in Thailand who raise tigers from cubs and give them piggy back rides and kisses? • We learned how these Indochinese tigers are being rescued because they are endangered. • We practiced going back into the text and finding evidence to answer comprehension questions.

  5. Monday, August 19, 2019 • We began our first chapter book today: Chocolate Touch. • The Legend of King Midas was read out loud, so that we could make predictions on how that legend and this story might be alike. • As we read together, we learned new vocabulary words and used context clues to figure out their meaning. • We tried to decide if we agreed or disagreed with the book when it stated that our character “behaved very well but should have behaved better.”

  6. Tuesday, August 20, 2019 • After completing chapter 1 of Chocolate Touch, we discussed what types of healthy foods the body needs to grow. • We used an organized list to solve problems with animal variables. • During our challenge math, we drew pictures to show our thinking, and we wrote equations to match our work. • We also discovered that some challenge math problems can be solved in more than one way.

  7. August 21, 2019 • While reading about volcanoes, we learned some new vocabulary words. • We practiced reading captions to illustrations. • The ring of fire touches many continents, so we learned about the 7 continents and how to use a map key and compass.

  8. August 26, 2019 • Idioms are phrases that don’t mean exactly what the words say. We learn a new idiom every day. • Before reading chapter 2 of Chocolate Touch, we made predictions about what might happen if John kept eating too much candy. • We were left wondering why the candy store owner was acting suspiciously. I guess we will have to read more of the book to find out!

  9. August 27, 2019 • We completed chapter 2 of Chocolate Touch today. We were surprised to find out the box of chocolate only had one single piece of candy in it! • Our challenge math work was very organized and neat. We are working to add number sentences to go with our pictures. • Multiplication helped us to solve our math teaser for this week.
