  2. Who are we? • HBYC stands for Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Youth Council • We are a group of 13 to 21 year olds • We have about 35 regular members from all over the Borough • We work within PoP

  3. Our Members 

  4. What is PoP? • This is Leicestershire’s Pyramid of Participation • We are part of the middle layer of Borough and District Youth Councils • HBYC captures the views of the youth of the Borough through the bottom layer of the pyramid.

  5. How do we work? • We have a full meeting every month • We elect our own executive committee who also meet separately once a month • We have many different sub groups including, Facilities, Dorothy Goodman and Safety

  6. Last year HBYC members held • 11 Full Council Meetings • 11 Executive Meetings • 2 Conferences • 1 Residential And • Dedicated countless hours to subgroups, organising events, giving presentations and conducting surveys

  7. Youth Conference - 2007 • Voice of Young People Conference 2007 • We ran workshops to educate on a wide variety of topics, including, how to deal with bullying, money skills, street crime, what makes a good student council and global warming

  8. Facilities Questionnaire • The Findings: • Cinema came in at number one with 438 votes, 27% • Followed by Ice Arena at 248, 15.29% • With Swimming Pool third at 111, 6.84% • Taking these into account the Youth Council has strived to get the youth of the Borough what they asked for: • Centre Screen Project – a mobile cinema project

  9. Parish Forums • We presented to the Parish Forum • Proposed the idea of parish councils having a youth champion (potentially a young person) • The Youth Council received letters praising their efforts • Some parish councils have already appointed youth champions, as well as groups of young people and have budgets set aside

  10. Parish Youth Champion • Keep youth issues first and foremost in their mind • Gather views of local young people • Raise a budget for youth events etc • Become a strong link between HBYC and their parish

  11. Progress so far: • Burbage Parish Council have invited Youth Council members to sit as part of their working group • They have also appointed a Youth Champion and assigned a budget • Barwell Parish Council have appointed a Youth Champion

  12. The Jitty - www.thejitty.com • The Jitty is a website for Young People by Young People, HBYC has its own mini site there • The site keeps members up to date and lets new members contact the Youth Council • It also helps to attract new Young People to the Youth Council • The Youth Council has its own Jitty officer who has kept this up to date throughout the year
