  2. Poetry • Definition: shortened form of writing • Figurative Language: metaphors, similes, personification • Author’s expression of feelings, opinions • May follow a form/structure

  3. Traditional Literature • Definition: stories passed down for generations by oral storytelling • Myths, Legends, Folktales, Fairy Tales, Nursery Rhymes, Tall Tales • Foundation of Fantasy

  4. Fantasy • Characters: talking animals, mythical creatures, magic users • Setting: often medieval, time travel (through magic) • Plot: heroes, journey/quest, often good vs. evil

  5. Science Fiction • Characters: mutants, robots, aliens, “mad” scientists, thinking computers • Setting: advanced tech cities, spaceships, other solar systems/galaxies, time travel (through technology) • Plot: alien attacks/visits, time traveling, technology, important experiments “gone wrong”

  6. Realistic Fiction • Characters: everyday people doing everyday things • Setting: modern time, realistic places • Plot: realistic events

  7. Historical Fiction • Characters: famous historical people • Setting: pre 1970, could be historical/important sites • Plot: authentic historical events, average or significant people

  8. Mystery • Characters: detectives, investigators, spies • Setting: could be crime scene, often detective agencies, often creepy house • Plot: crime or mysterious events + clues=solution

  9. Biography/Autobiography • Biograpy: story of someone’s life written by someone else • Autobiography: story of someone’s life written by themselves

  10. Informational • Purpose: provides information on a wide range of topics • Nonfiction • Science, craft, sports, articles, Social Studies • Informs you on things you want to be informed on
