Barthes’ Enigma Code • What questions are raised in the minds of the audience to keep their interest?
Structure • Beginning / middle /end. Todorov ‘s 3 part structure: Equilibrium Disequilibrium New Equilibrium NB – A film opening is likely to have unresolved narratives – left at disequilibrium stage - (see Barthes Enigma code)
Character • Propp’s Characters • Protagonist (or hero) • Antagonist (or villain) • Heroine (or Princess – love interest) • Father (authority figure) • Helper (or sidekick) • Donor (gives the protagonist something to help them in their quest.) • Mentor (teacher or guide)
Narrative Conflict • Claude Levi Strauss and Binary Oppositions • Drama comes from conflict of oppositions: Good v. Evil Love v. Hate Young v. Old Male v. Female Weak v. Strong Gentle v. Fierce
