This international expert workshop aims to discuss and evaluate existing approaches to measuring gender equality, with a focus on indicators and data collection related to social institutions. The workshop aims to develop a roadmap for future activities and improve the data quality in this area.

Background Growing interest in “gender equality” and “gender statistics” Gender equality an intrinsic goal e.g. Millennium Development Goals ...but also instrumental in obtaining other objectives e.g. debate on gender equality and economic growth; “womenomics” But: how to measure gender equality; how to improve gender statistics? Various research projects, expert meetings, e.g. UN Inter-Agency and Expert Meeting on Gender Statistics

  3. Background OECD Gender, Institutions and Development Data-Base – launch 2006 Conventional data on gender equality Demographic, economic, political, educational, health and composite indicators. New data Social institutions: family code, physical integrity, ownership rights, civil liberties.

  4. Objectives Taking stock of existing approaches to measure gender equality – focus on indicators Assessing their respective strengths and weaknesses Discussing ways of improving the data collection and quality – focus on social institutions Start to develop a road map for further activities

  5. Key questions How do social institutions affect gender equality? How can they be measured? How to ensure an appropriate approach for OECD and non-OECD countries? What are the uses and abuses of composite indicators? Are country rankings based on composite indicators useful? How can we improve the data collection and quality – in particular related to social institutions? What are the next steps and who takes the lead for what activity?
