2. First Year: Nothing Second Year: Pharmacology/Introduction to Clinical Medicine: One lecture each on pain medications and management. Special focus on management of chronic pain. Current Curriculum

3. Primary Changes to be Made • Formation of the Death and Dying interest group through AMSA • Introduction of an Elective for Either M1’s or M2’s • The elective will be offered spring quarter

4. Introduction: What is hospice? Speaker from the North Chicago VA hospice Viewing and discussion of Wit Dr. Bubbers lecture on Geriatric Medicine To Live Until I Die Video Dinner and Filling out Advanced Directives Writing session about death, and reading Set up volunteer opportunities for those interested with the North Chicago VA hospice Death and Dying Interest Group

5. M1/M2 Elective (10 weeks) • Pain management speaker (dose conversions, common pain meds)-Pharmacology Dept • Ethical Cases of EOL with Dr. Tomkowiak

6. M1/M2 Elective (10 weeks) • The physician and end of life care/ the path to death (symptoms) - CMS faculty • To Live Until I Die Video viewing and discussion with a visiting professor/ Dr. T • Advanced Directives - CMS faculty

7. M1/M2 Elective (10 weeks) • Introduction to shadowing and volunteer opportunities at the North Chicago VA Hospice- Member of VA hospice team • Hospice VA North Chicago 300 Buckley Road North Chicago, IL Telephone: 847-688-1900 EXT 5575 -- Students will be required to shadow with one or more disciplines within the hospice team for two sessions. Once per two weeks designated for classes.

8. M1/M2 Elective (10 weeks) • Alternative Medicine talk (CAM) - Regina Chen (from the college of Health Professions) • Viewing of Wit and Discussion with visiting professor • Dr. Bubbers lecture on Geriatric Medicine (will be class mtg for one of the weeks)

9. Other Curriculum Changes In the first two years… • First Year: • Addition of end of life case studies to the ethics class • Addition of a patient presenter who has a terminal disease to the ICM presentation on “patients’ with disabilities” • The presentation is structured to bring up sensitive issues for physicians when dealing with patient’s who have special needs

10. Other Curriculum Changes In the first two years… • Second Year: • Introduction to Clinical Medicine course: • Communicating Bad News workshop • An interactive workshop for the students/ role playing • A lecture on End of Life Bedside Assessment • A look at common end of life physical symptoms

11. Recruitment • For the M1 class: Introduction of both the death and dying group and the elective at the initial AMSA meeting during the first week of school. • For the M2 class: Announcement in second year lecture hall

12. Changes for the Third Year • The option of doing a three week rotation with a palliative care team in place of the ambulatory care rotation.
