TAPIR “TDWG Access Protocol for Information Retrieval” development status report
Why TAPIR was developed • Prevent divide into 2 networks • Address problems encountered with DiGIR and BioCASe • Esp. more flexible conceptual binding • Support for all TDWG standards
TAPIR Activities 2004/5 • Draft designed Sept 2004 • by DiGIR and BioCASe developers with GBIF support • Wrapper implementations • Berlin: BioCASe PyWrapper v2 finished • Edinburgh, TCS test mapping • Kansas: work started on Java version • Client/Portal implementations • None
TAPIR Outlook 2005/6 • Towards the standard specification • Start a separate subgroup apart from ABCD • Investigate implementation problems • Reconcile draft into proper specification • Submission of proposed standard for TDWG 2006 • Wrapper implementations • Berlin: Develop PyWrapper provider tools • Kansas: Finish DiGIR provider software supporting several protocols including TAPIR • Allow TAPIR services to become BioMOBY services • Client/Portal implementations • GBIF: Use TAPIR for central XML services and indexing • IPGRI: Set up distributed information system based on TAPIR & MCPD (Multi Crop Passport Data)
New ideas to be discussed • View definitions: • Result ordering • “Environment variable” mappings: date, access point, data source name • Aggregating functions for repeatable nodes like concatenation or min/max • Remove “schema” from tag naming to be open for other conceptual bindings • Add “processing section” for XSLT inclusion or non verbose mode
Known Issues • Investigate potential problems • View interpretation might depend on db schema (relevant also for paging) • Relation to TDWG standards • Recursive schema structures cause problems for implementations
TAPIR at TDWG • Talks • Tue, de la Torre “Using TAPIR views from standard applications” • Thu, Döring “Practical potential of TAPIR” • Computer Demo • Tue, 14:30 TAPIR PyWrapper implementation • Subgroup meetings • Mon, 16:50 • Fri, 11:30
