Dec05-01 Team Information Project Requirements Client Senior Design Electrical and Computer Engineering Iowa State University Faculty Advisors Dr. John Lamont, Professor Ralph Patterson III, Assistant Professor • Design Objectives • Allow senior design teams to complete all project tasks in the facilities provided • Promote easy access and use of all equipment • Prevent harm to computers caused from the use of mechanical equipment Team Members Jason Boyd jaboyd@iastate.edu CprE Klosak, Michael mklosak@iastate.edu EE Hoernecke, Andrew ahoernec@iastate.edu CprE Saathoff, Matthew msaath@iastate.edu EE • Functional Requirements • Two computer labs for projects with different levels of security • Space must accommodate 15-30 people for project presentations • Two or more meeting areas for teams and their advisors • Secure storage areas for projects, parts, and equipment • Three separate small project rooms for special projects Introduction • Design Constraints • Must fit within the space allowed by the architect • Must be completed within 2 semesters • Must be implementable within the budget allotted • by the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering Abstract Architectural plans are currently being developed to renovate and expand Coover Hall. When these plans are completed and funding is available, the senior design facilities will be moved from their current location back into Coover Hall. The objective of this project is to determine what are the desirable features and capabilities of the new facility. The team will analyze the specific requirements needed to create an optimal environment for the new senior design facilities accounting for space, tools, computers, instruments, furnishings, and security. The team will then research each of these areas, and provide a detailed report that can be used to create the optimal senior design facility in Coover Hall. The proposed facilities will equip students with better tools for their project’s success, and increase project progress and efficiency. • Measurable Milestones • Evaluation of project plan by the client • Completion of research including: surveys, equipment, technology, and space • Submission of final report Approach and Considerations • Proposed Approach • Define problem and assess current resources • Research technologies for improvements • Incorporate findings into a detailed design report Acknowledgement The members of this team would like to thank Dr. Lamont and Prof. Patterson for their contribution of advice, and technical expertise. The team would also like to thank Dr. Jacobson, Chair of the ECpE Building Committee, for allowing the team to be involved with the senior design portion of the new Coover Hall. • Technologies Considered • Multimedia for presentations • Hardware & software • Circuit design • Existing equipment • Limited mechanical facilities Problem Statement Upon completion of the expansion and renovation of Coover Hall, Senior Design will have to vacate their current space on the third floor of the Town Engineering Building. Testing Considerations After completion of the new facility, distribute an evaluation survey to second semester senior design students • Operating Environment • High tech laboratory for the senior design student: • Circuit fabrication • Software development • Meeting and presentation facilities • Limited mechanical facilities Estimated Resources and Project Schedule Personal Effort Financial/Other Resources • Intended Users • Senior Design Students • Project Clients • Faculty Advisors Intended Uses All stages of senior design projects from definition and planning through delivery of end product. • Assumptions • Space in Coover Hall will be provided for the new senior design facility • Current equipment and resources will be retained • The University will provide funds to purchase new equipment and other materials • Furnishings will be included in the Coover Hall expansion budget Project Schedule • Limitations • Area covered by the new facility must not exceed 2,400 square feet • Initial floor-plan of the new facility must be ready for approval by the University • President in April 2005. Expected End Product and Deliverables A report detailing the layout and technology for the new senior design facility. Conceptual Layout 2 Closing Summary This report will help alleviate the problem of where to put Senior Design and how much it will cost to move and create the optimal senior design environment. It will also serve to smooth the transition from the current location to the new facility in Coover Hall. Several factors will be researched for the final design including: security, usability for both faculty and students, and current technology. A detailed design report will be provided to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to use for creating the new senior design facility. Conceptual Layout 1
